Illini Linebacker Jake Hansen Declares For NFL Draft

There has been a lot going on today in the Illini sports world, as well as the sports world in general. But that's a good thing because that means business is booming. Don't forget to follow us on Instagram @TwinCityJournal_ for the latest, up-to-date content in the CU area.

As we all know, the U of I recently hired a new Head Football Coach in Bret Bielema after firing Lovie Smith due to lack of performance. The new hire, that has brought on a carousel of players staying, entering the NFL draft, or transferring. Add one more to the NFL Draft list and this one hurts Jake Hansen.

What It Means:

Jake Hansen has been a staple in the linebacking core for the U of I in his four-year career, and he was one of the main players that I wanted back. Hansen ranked 10th in the Big Ten this season in tackles, and 7th in total tackles. The kicker is Hansen was 3rd in TFL(Tackle for Loss) and 1st in the NCAA in forced fumbles with 7, tying his career-high last year. This is a massive hole that will have to be filled early in the Bielema era, but Hansen is one of a kind player.

Moving Forward:

Kahlan Tolson will more than likely move to the "mike" unless the new regime were to recruit or sign a player from the transfer portal. Tolson last season stepped up for the Illini. The Junior Linebacker added 17 tackles, and 1 FF on the year which was in the first game of the year against Wisconsin for the scoop and score. Tolson is the only player I see that can move into the pivotal role and call the shots on defense with what players the Illini have available.

Thanks, Jake:

Jake Hansen has made the last four seasons fun to watch on the defensive side of the ball, with the pivotal "Lovie Ball" running through him at all times. Hansen has a nose for the football and knows where to be at all times. Watching Hansen perfect the Peanut Punch in his time at Illinois will be something that will stick with me for the rest of my time as an Illini fan. Good luck, Jake in the NFL.
